Never Summer Wilderness, Colorado

On Wednesday, August 10th I fly to Denver, rent a car, and drive to the CDT trail where the trail intersects highway 40 outside of Steamboat Springs. I arrive slightly after Midnight. The next morning I meet Dad and we hike together, on and off, for the next three days. On Sunday morning I drive back to Denver and fly home.

Day 1 Road walk to the divide and walking on the divideWe start walking two miles on Highway 40 to Highway 14, which we follow 9 miles to a forest service road which we follow up about 9 miles. We then walk along the divide around 5 miles together before I have to turn around.
Day 2 Climbing Parkview MountainI do town chores and get oriented. I then hike back to meet Dad on the top of Parkview Mountain. We then hike back to the car together and stay in a motel.
Day 3 Never Summer WildernessAfter a 9 mile trail/jeep road walk where I meet Dad half way and walk back to the car, we hike together into the Never Summer Wilderness area. We walk along a ridge line where we can see back to Park View Mountain and ahead to Grand Lake where Dad will be tomorrow. After about 7 miles, I turn around a head back to the car via a mini loop and Dad continues. It starts raining shortly before I turn around and this translates to snow in the high areas of the Never Summer Wilderness so I walk amongst a snow storm in the middle of August.
Day 4 Dad continues on and I return to PortlandI hike back Denver and return to Portland with just memories of past days like the picture to the left.
